Baálẹ̀ — Village head
Category: Titles
The recognised head of a village or of a quarter within a larger town, subordinate to the Ọba.
A Baálẹ̀ handles day-to-day local disputes and administration, reporting up to the town's Ọba on larger matters.
A Baálẹ̀ is the recognised head of a smaller settlement or of a specific quarter within a larger town — a position that handles everyday local matters directly, while still answering up to the town's Ọba on bigger disputes or decisions.
The title is distinct from Ọba: a Baálẹ̀ leads without the ceremonial crown and sacred status of a monarch, functioning more like a recognised community elder and administrator than a king.
Example: Baálẹ̀ abúlé wa yanjú ìjà náà. — "The head of our village settled the dispute."
