Abúlé — Village

Category: Places

A small rural settlement, traditionally centred around farming and close-knit family compounds.

Many Yorùbá towns trace their origin to an abúlé that grew, over generations, into a larger ìlú (town).

An abúlé is typically small enough that most residents know each other, organised around extended family compounds and farmland rather than the market-and-palace structure of a full ìlú — the difference is one of scale and institutions, not a sharp dividing line.

Many present-day Yorùbá towns and even cities began as a single abúlé that grew over generations as families expanded and more people settled nearby, so the word still carries a sense of origin and roots even once a place has outgrown it.

Example: A dàgbà ní abúlé kékeré kan ní ìgbèríko. — "We grew up in a small village in the countryside."
