Ọ̀ṣun-Òṣogbo — Annual festival honouring the Ọ̀ṣun river
Category: Festivals
An annual festival held in Òṣogbo along the Ọ̀ṣun river, drawing devotees and visitors from around the world.
The Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The festival honours Ọ̀ṣun, an òrìṣà (deity) associated with fresh water, fertility, and prosperity, and takes place every August over roughly two weeks of ceremonies, culminating in a procession to the sacred grove on the banks of the Ọ̀ṣun river.
Its central figure is the Àrùgbà, a specially chosen votary maiden who carries the sacred calabash (ìkòkò òsùn) in procession to the river as an offering — considered the ritual heart of the festival.
The Ọ̀ṣun-Òṣogbo Sacred Grove, with its shrines, sculptures, and artwork — including work by the Austrian-born artist and priestess Susanne Wenger, who helped restore the grove from the mid-20th century onward — was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.
