Agbádá — Flowing wide-sleeved robe
Category: Clothing
A large, flowing robe worn by men over a shirt (bùbá) and trousers (ṣòkòtò).
Agbádá is regarded as formal wear, often reserved for special occasions.
A full agbádá outfit is actually three pieces: the wide-sleeved outer robe itself, an inner shirt called bùbá, and trousers called ṣòkòtò worn underneath — the flowing robe is the most visible layer, but it's never worn alone.
The sleeves are deliberately oversized, and how a wearer gathers or drapes the extra fabric over the shoulder is itself a small display of style, especially at formal events like weddings and chieftaincy ceremonies.
Example: Bàbá mi wọ agbádá aláwọ̀ búlúù sí ayẹyẹ náà. — "My father wore a blue agbada to the ceremony."
